History

The brick building at 1020 E. Walnut dates back roughly a century. In 1975 Kirk Wacker and David Eagle opened the North Village Sub Shop here, in what had been an appliance store. They covered the big front windows with painted murals, built a patio out front, and in 1978 teamed up with the campus arcade The Wizard’s Den to sell their sandwiches. The sub shop stayed on Walnut until its lease ended in 1991.

The Project

Over the years, the 1970s storefront additions fell into disrepair. Taking them off uncovered the original brick building underneath, which is part of the Downtown Columbia Historic District, expanded on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.

Today the remodeled building is home to Serendipity Salon & Gallery and a collection of small businesses, artist studios, wellness providers and independent offices.

The North Village Sub Shop

Murals filled the front windows, flowers lined a railroad-tie patio and a hand-lettered sign hung over the door. This photo was taken three years after the North Village Sub Shop opened, the same year it started selling sandwiches at The Wizard’s Den.
